Horizon Zero Dawn has been treated to a surprise patch that allows the open world title from Guerrilla Games to run at 60 frames-per-second on PlayStation 5. You will still be running the game in backwards compatibility, but update 1.53 enables the feature and can be downloaded right now.
The most important patch note for the update reads:
- Unlocked framerate to 60 frames per second when running on a PS5 console in backwards compatibility mode
So, there we have it. Out of nowhere Horizon Zero Dawn receives the patch fans have been waiting for: 60FPS on PS5!

Nice. If I ever get around to owning a PS5, I might finally do that second playthrough.
This really came out of the blue but hey I'm not complaining. It's about time.
Great for when I replay in preparation for sequel
How much are they charging us ? đ€Ł
What the heck was it running at before 60 FPS ?
Ahhh maybe this could be preceding a Gamescom announcement with delay...
YESSSSSSSSS!!!!!!!
Nice now I have to replay before the sequel.
Heck yes! Now it's time to get a PS5 been waiting for this!
Now do Bloodborne.
@Tecton217 30fps.
Sweet! I'm only about 1/3 of the way through my replay, so this is very welcome. I think I'll boot it up tonight in point of fact.
Ohhhhh Baby!!!!
Finally ready to jump back in and finish the frozen wilds.
Such a great news!!!
Now please Uncharted 4 and the Lost legacy.
Damn! Just as I finished the main story the other day!
At least I've got the Frozen Wilds yet to complete... Can do so in 60fps now!
About f@#king time...
@Orpheus79V oh yikes, itâs about time then lol.
@Residentsteven i had the same issue..it started really slow for me but stick with it as it really was a surprise for me and now i'm going to start it over again and platinum it..i really did under value this game..the shame..đȘ
@velio84
Dam you beat me to it.
A good date, plenty to play at Christmas
Multi console owner.
About time.
Looks like I'll be replaying this a third time when I eventually get a PS5.
Best news of the day!
Seems that the 60fps patches are coming through a bit thicker and faster these days.
AC Odyssey the other day, HZD today...
Bloodborne.... tomorrow!??!
IT'S ABOUT TIME!!! X')
Omg Yaas, finally I can finish Frozen Wilds
Lets goooooooo
Good news. Would hope they would also boost resolution checkerboarding to make it look less pixelated, but will take 60 fps any day. Going to try get to the game, once I finish with the oddyssey. 60 fps patch was a game changer for AC. 25 hrs in and only did like 10% of the game and map
Awesome, I've been playing on PC at high framerates and it makes a huge difference to the game so I hope you all enjoy
See, I just want more of this. Next-gen upgrades are amazing, but if all companies did was unlock the framerate for PS5 then I would be happy as can be.
Oooh, perfect, just what I was waiting for
So we just need Bloodborne and what else?
Very cool, I stopped playing a while back on the PS4 so this gives me extra motivation to continue! Now I just need to squeeze it in somewhere...
@ShogunRok It's time.
My god yes! I literally started this this morning for the first time. That could not be more perfect for me!!
Glad I left starting this until now
Finally!
I'll definitely play the game again before Horizon Forbidden West comes out. I have until February so no rush!
Very cool! Completed and loved the game but never started Frozen WildsâŠmay have to jump back in.
Patience pays off! Been waiting to play this since I picked it up for like $10 last summer. Great stuff
Seems like I will finally play the expansion Frozen Wilds. I bought it but somehow never played it.....then decided to wait for PS5 improvements.
Once I'm done with Iki Island, back to Alloy đđđ
@AFCC
1) Bloodborne
2) Gravity Rush 2
3) The Last Guardian (they capped it in a patch⊠donât think itâs been uncapped yet?)
4) Uncharted 4
5) Lost Legacy
I think thatâs it for first party games⊠sadly first 3 likely wonât ever happen because. Well. Japan Studio. đą
So if they boosted the framerate. Did they also go in and fix the animations issues that cropped up due to the game running at a higher framerate?
Nice, still haven't played the dlc. Probably prior to the sequel.
@Perryg92 Exactly the same here, just finished the main story earlier this week. Still, absolutely loved it, and excited to try the Frozen Wilds stuff, especially now I've got the special armour.
@Tecton217 Solid 30 FPS whats the issue the game ran great for me i never had any issues.
@Flaming_Kaiser I found it relatively smooth as well with 30 fps.
The main issue is that when you have played several games with 60 fps you wonât really go back to 30⊠so itâs a welcome addition. Have Platin in the main game but Iâve never finished the frozen wilds addon. Going to do this now
@Reeneman I played some 60FPS but i have to be honest i never had a issue in PS4 where i thought man this run terrible with HZD played for over 120 hours. Man this game was great fun even finding the collectibles where a blast because they had a purpose of rilling in the backstory. The controls where great i loved the fighting. I forgot how great this game was i really see it as a great achievement with what they made om the PS4 and how it it ran.
I've tried twice to get through HZD. Both times open world fatigue set in badly. I found the story and quests oddly unemotional despite trying to be. Like the game version of that overwrought Snow Patrol song. I liked everything else about the game, though, and hopefully the story gets more soulful later because I think this 60fps patch is going to lead to a third new game.
@lolwhatno Bloodborne quite famously has frame pacing issues causing stutter, and runs sub-30fps at times. Iâve finished it 100% several times over, but last time I restarted I just couldnât deal with the framerate anymore. Now that ps5 has made 60 FPS standard, itâll be all the more unbearable.
@Flaming_Kaiser no issue, âsolid 30 fpsâ just sounds like a meme for an older game running on a ps5. Sad that it took this long for the game to not be hard coded capped at a ridiculously low FPS for a system that has the capability of running at a decent 60 FPS. Incredible itâs taken nearly a year for games to take advantage of the ps5 specs. Ideally all these games would have been fixed for ps5 before ps5 launch.
@UrbanPlaystation Iâm sure theyâll get a few more sales from this article drop. But itâs just incredible to me that the game was capped at 30 to begin with, but even more so for such a huge PS game that there wasnât more pressure for them to actually utilize next gen specs at launch, not like they didnât know it was coming. You had games running at 60 FPS since the â90s, meanwhile pc gamers are up to like 360 FPS. Guess I just forgot how far behind consoles really are, and a little shocked more game devs arenât as eager to bring their games up to a respectable level since the tools are available. Sony probably should have applied some more pressure in this regard.
No fricking way,I've been wanting this for ages and I'm on holiday đ«
@Tecton217 I had a brilliant time with 30FPS on the PS4 so im not in the camp that 30 FPS are unplayable.
I want to go even further this was one of my best games if not the best on the base PS4 it and played fantastic. I play on a TV that does not go higher then 60FPS at 1080P.
Its still is a stunning game and it plays fantastic. I really dont agree that 30FPS is terrible or unplayable. Even if it would be only playable at 30FPS people should play.
The game was and is still brilliant there isnt a issue with the game and i think Sony rather have them work on the second part because the first is great as it is.
@AFCC Bloodborne, The Last of Us Part II...I can't think of anything else right now.
@KidBoruto Last of Us Part II already has it bro!
@AFCC As a patch yes, but I want a next-gen upgrade.
@KidBoruto aaaah! That won't happen, at least until the multiplayer comes
@AFCC Fair point, but if we can get Director's Cuts for both Ghost of Tsushima and Death Stranding...anything's possible.
